The UK independent sector as a whole educates approximately 628,000 children in around 2,600 schools.  The independent sector educates around 6.5% of the total number of school children in the UK (and over 7% of the total number of school children in England) with the figure rising to more than 18% of pupils over the age of 16.  There are now over 512,000 children in independent fee schools.  Of these, over 67,000 are boarders and 450,000 are day pupils Approximately 20,600 pupils are non-British with parents living overseas.  Over 8,800 new non-British pupils whose parents live overseas joined independent schools in 2008.  Approximately one third of these were from Hong Kong and China and nearly 40% were from Europe.
